Journals from Grace Marks

Grace Marks
January 5th, 1854
It was an obscure day as usual. I have been in Asylum for 29 years. During the 29 years, I could hardly forget the murder of Mr. Kinnear and Nancy. However,  could not remember what I had done? or what had McDommt done? In addition to these, it was nice of the Governor's wife to keep me as her servant.
As always, there were many guests come to visit the house of the Governor's wife. Most of them were doctors and nobilities. The different was, her two daughters came too. They watched me vigilantly as I were a tiger; and jealousy, since everyone said I was handsome and pretty, much prettier than the pictures of mine on her scrap book.
Today was a regular day. I got used to suffer from my bitter memory and endure people's scornful eye sights.

August 6th, 1854
They released me from the Asylum. The advent of the next doctor totally scared me. I wished he was not the one who cut off McDermott. Oh, here he was, he looked charming, polite and handsome. He was smiling at me. His name was Dr. Jordan. Would he trust me or not? When he took out his notes book, I was totally relaxed. He  gave me an apple, did this help to recall your lost memory? He asked. Was he laughing at me? I thought we could be friends in the future days. He didn't seem to threaten me.
We finished our conversation for today. I felt released. I got closed to him. At least, I knew, I would not have the same fortune as McDermott. Or, was it a trick?

May 7th, 1855
Dr. Jordan and I have been meeting for almost one month since yesterday. He didn't come today, I felt like missing him. I couldn't help thinking, he was much better than McDermott. I wanted to share more about my experience. I felt relaxed being with him. Rather than his kindness towards me, I confessed that I fell in love with him.
Tonight, I lie on my bed. I thought I saw the illusions of Mary Whitney and Nancy Montgomery. They wanted to talk to me, especially Nancy. I was scared and curious. I was still confused: were they real? or was I dreaming? I wished they both lived, so that I would not suffered from my guilty.

April 6th, 1855
Dr. Jordan said, he was going to take me to his spiritualist group. I was trembling. I always dreamed about it: they were trying to cut my head off, in order to investigate what was in my head. Although legal treatment would not be as cruel as the Asylum did. Mr. DuPont, the main doctor, who glared at me seriously, as if I were a lion suffering from hunger. "Hypnosis was as safe as eating", said Mr. DuPont.
I awoke. I was still sitting on my chair. They asked me, whether I remembered what I had done. I had no idea. They all seemed shocked, even angry.
"Were you pretending", asked Dr. DuPont. " I was sleeping, and you woke me up." I replied.
I didn't know what they were talking about, or what I had done during my hypnosis. However, have I been proved innocent or not?

October 9th, 1895
I was knitting a sweater. The Governor's wife rushed into my room without knocking the door, the man behind her is Jaime Walsh. he told me excitedly, guess what, you were going to marry to Jaime Walsh, and you two were going to move to Los Angeles.
As I was in shocking, Jaime Walsh stride towards me, he said he was sorry for not proving my innocence on the court. He begged me to forgive him, and e would have a brand new start in Los Angeles.  I accepted it, at least everything was over, and I was not going to see Dr. Jordan again.
We had our new house there. It was big, as gorgeous as Mr. Kinnear's. "This was your new house", said Jaime Walsh.
All my suspicions suddenly eliminated. I will not suffer from scorn and discrimination, even the shame of murder.

reading response 2

Response 2 Guiding Questions:

1. For the middle chapters, the place in Alias Grace changed. Grace Marks' memories flash back to the place of her employment. Since Grace had been locked in the Asylum due to her involvement in the murder of her employer and housekeeper. However, Grace Marks' past and her mental disorder are caused in her childhood. Her employer, Thomas Kinnear, is the victim of her. His house is not only the place she got employed but also the area murder happened.
2. In the middle chapters, the general feeling is mysterious. Moreover, the up-and-coming expert, Dr. Simon Jordan, has his own affair with his landlady Ms. Humphrey, he is confused by his own sentiments. As a result, sexual element is one of the key clue to help me explore more about Grace's story.
3. The characters I choose to compare are the Governor's wife and Nancy Montgomery. Both female characters have high social status. But both characters treat Grace Marks with different behaviours. For the Governor's wife, she treats Grace with as a lady; as for Nancy, she treats Grace hard, because she thinks Grace might love Mr. Kinnear; the Governor's wife is an intelligent woman with her sagacity, while Nancy is the housekeeper relying on Mr. Kinnear, they are not couple. Nancy has to work hard on Mr. Kinnear's house. While the Governor's wife only needs to investigate crimes with her husband. Nancy thinks about Grace "lately become quarrelsome"; as the Governor's Wife, Grace is "tidy and handsome".
4. 1)Grace and Nancy: both characters have fight because Nancy always suspects that Grace might grab the love of Kinnear but Grace never thinks about it.
2)Dr. Jordan always struggle among his own sentiments: he doesn't know how to arrange his own motion about love, or he can hardly recognize what is corruption, what is love.
5. In the middle chapters, Grace Marks is the narrator. She is involved in this novel since she is the murderer of her housekeeper and the employer. She talks about her past before she became a murderer.
6. this book is written in both first narrator and third narrator. By using both narrative ways, it shows the social background and its cultural identity.
7. in these middle chapters, I have a feeling that rash loves always lead people to corruption, In these middle chapters, from chapter12 to chapter24, these eleven chapters describe main characters involved in emotional issues and they paralyzed. People are easy to get corrupted.
8.  “When I was younger I used to think that if I could hug myself tight enough I could make myself smaller, because there was never enough room for me, at home or anywhere, but if I was smaller, I might fit in.” (P 33) I choose this quotations, because it totally shows the other aspects of a murderer. According to psychologist, most murderers have their own internal inhibitions. They release them through murder. Grace has her own constraint as well. She wants to protect herself so that no one will hurt her anymore.

response 1 Guiding questions

1. The story in this novel takes place in Victorian Age in Canada, written  by Margaret Atwood. Victoria age is the age that MALES abuse their rights and authorities to FEMALES. This story is rearranged accordance with the real person because the main character, Grace Marks, had been one of the notorious female murderers in the sixteenth century in Canada. She had once suffered from mental disorder.
2. Grace Marks, the main character in this novel. She is an extreme pretty girl. Her family emigrates to Canada. She suffers from her early-age-loss of beloved mother, abusive treatments from father, and scorns from her housekeeper. She undergoes a great deal of trauma in her childhood. Her murder towards her housekeeper is a mystery. The first impression of her is: pure, silent, and vigilant.
3. Doctor Simon, one of the fact-finding committee, who explores Grace's secrets, has been involved in complexity: sexual, duality, love, family relationship and his own future. He believes Grace is innocent.
4. Doctor Simon is Grace's private doctor. Doctor Simon cares about Grace's history and tries to fix her trauma and personality split. In addition to his formula, he has a bright future on his career of physiology. Grace Marks can be a good case for him to investigate.
5. Grace Marks describes her only friend Marry Whitney died in the house due to abortion. The windows are closed. As a result, instead of flying out of the room, it flies into Grace's body. From now on, Grace has double personalities: one is Grace, the other if Marry Whitney. So, it is mystery for us: Does Grace really kill her housekeeper?
6. One of the traits in this novel mentions: the government is corrupted. They usually abuse the money from people to do private stuff. In addition to this, same as other novels, women are stereotype weak; social conflicts are never end.
7. When I first read the early chapters, I feel mysterious and the air is full of bitterness. At the beginning of the novel, it describes that Grace is in jail, we don't know how grace is going to be treated.
8. Too much trauma can cause physical and mental disorder.
9. Mental disorder is caused by some extreme stimulation from events and violence. Mental illnesses are hard to be cure. We never know if these medical treatments are legal to patients.
10. Is Grace the murder of her housekeeper? Why is Grace released from the jail, is Grace an exception in the history of crime? Does she love her housekeeper? Is Grace cured at the end of the novel? Is hypnosis a legal way to fix mental disorder?

Friends are important for our lives

Our lives are consisted of many beautiful concepts. One of the memorable parts are our friends. "A friend is one who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself", this quotation describes the role that friends play in one's life. Without friends, people are living in loneliness in spite of the fame and wealth; the true value of friendship is worthy of the treasure from God.  This essay will explain why friends are the key parts in an individual's life. It describes companionship taking place in terms of literature, mundane concerns and current events.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed", it portraits that a great friend can risk his/her life for one. There is a true story that confirms its authenticity; it takes place in England. Sam and Smith are best friends in the comrade-in-arms. Unluckily, Sam loses blood excessively during the World War One. Such a tragedy can be lethal if there are no first-aid measures offered in time. As people know, it is difficult to look for blood on the battlefield. To our surprise, Smith, as his best friend, donates his own blood on his initiative to Sam. As a result, Sam survives. This story was moving me.  A friend is one of the essentials of our lives; friends support each other every time one is in despair, especially, when one faces the problems.
A friend always stands by one's side. A friend laughs with you when you are in happy time; he/she wipes your tears away when you are crying due to painful and setbacks. I have undergone such a touching experience. I used to have stage fright. English presentations can be fatal to me. One day, I shared this greatest fear with her. As my friend, she encouraged me to feel relaxed, speak slower, and practice more. To my surprise, I overcame such shortcoming. I'm full of rejoicing. Through this personal experience, a friend plays a foremost role in one's path through life: other than families, a friend is the one who really cares about you. A best friend's advice will be your greatest betterment.
Friends are one of the requests that help people tide over crisis, especially for those celebrities. Remember the Germany inventor who produced absorbent paper? even though there is no record of his name. This invention came from his wrong formula for making the paper. His mistake caused his dismissal. However, one of his friends, mentioned this mistake could be a good revolution for paper. That is why we can fix liquid splashing problems.  Had not his friend mentioned such things, there would be no napkins, toilet paper and Kleenex, etc. Hence, a friend's advice can save one's future, especially, this person has an intelligent friend.
Overall, having friends in one's life is a memorable thing. A friend cares about one's mood and feeling whenever difficulties approach or the advent of happiness. Friends are one of the most cherished possessions meriting human's fraternity; friendship leads you to explore more about the world. The source of the confidence and development comes from companionship. Without it, one's inner world will be a blur.

Author's blog(Catherine Daughter)

It was another dim and cool day. I wouldn't have known what was going on with my dearest lover Young Linton since those unknown people brought him away.
It was the first time I ran freely on the field. On a large jutting stone,  I saw a gentleman who is handsome but much older than me. He must have been waiting for me for a long time because he told me that he knew me. Out of curiosity, I went with him.
I was surprised. I saw my Young Linton again. However, instead of being rejoicing, I was shocked, he knew a lot about my died mother and the gentleman was the culprit. Even worse, I realized a bigger intrigue was behind the house. It was out of my instinct. My mother must had been mentally tortured by him. This must be a revenge for everyone around her. What a dangerous man!
I could not endure this. God, please help me, punish this devil. Everyone was innocent except him. Save us, God. I beg you!

life of emily bronte

Life of Emily Bronte

Since we had watched the clips about Emily Bronte's story. We have known that at that age, it was not equal between men and women. That was the reason why women "had no literary skills". However, Emily and her sisters were gifted and creative. Her father, Patrick, as one of her obstacles in her literary life, had shook her and her sisters' intelligence. Further, her family suffered a lot from there area. His mother suffer from cancer for seven months and died. When she was six years old, she was sent the Clergy Daughters' School. It was the school which was full of abusiveness.
I had read the story about her. Emily was the youngest child in her family. His father put a lot on his son rather than his gifted daughters. However, as his brother's failure, he kept drinking and drinking. That was the reason the only brother died when he was very young.
Emily's story was sad. But also told use how dark that age was.
